London 2017 Environmental Assessment for the IAAF and Para-World Athletics
In 2017 we carried out the environmental impact study of the IAAF and Para World Athletics London 2017. The assessment covered both the London 2017 World Para Athletics and IAAF World Championships and reviewed the impacts of these events against the industry best practice framework: ISO 20121 Event Sustainability Management System and UK’s ‘Event Impacts’ framework.
Since 2010, Earth to Ocean has developed a database of sport and sustainability initiatives and we use this in our benchmarking of sustainability best practice.
As a result of the recommendations, Earth to Ocean have recently supported the IAAF in the development of a comprehensive sustainability strategy.
Golf Foundation Tournament certification and 2014 Ryder Cup 2014 Sustainability programme
Working with the Golf Foundation we managed the Ryder Cup Sustainabilty programme and the European Tour's Green Drive. We initiated the development of the ISEAL standard for the international golf organisation, The Golf Foundation’s sustainability standard for events. We then supported the Golf Foundation and European Tour through their first verification audit in 2017 and 2018.
Links to the event verification reports can be found on the Golf Foundation website.
Sustainability strategy and implementation at Land Rover BAR
We developed the ISO20121 management system for the sports team Land Rover BAR and were the first sports team to achieve the certification, setting up the monitoring and reporting framework and sustainable procurement system; publishing their annual sustainability (GRI) reports; and developing the team carbon footprint, resulting in carbon neutrality for their development team, the BAR Academy. We deployed the management system at each of the events attended and worked with the event organisers to improve their own sustainability. We also developed the sustainability team charter which all teams competing in the 36th America’s Cup signed up to.
Our sustainability programme was award winning, achieving Beyond Sport's, Sport for Environment Award, the British Marine's Environment Award and Boat International Seafarer's award. In addition, in 2017, Susie Tomson was awarded Business Green's Sustainability Leader of the Year for driving the programme.
World Sailing Sustainability Strategy
We delivered the International Federation, World Sailing, Sustainability Strategy. This was launched at their Sustainability Forum at the 2016 Annual Conference in Barcelona, Spain by World Sailing CEO Andy Hunt. The sustainability strategy defined World Sailing's approach across three pillars of sustainability - economic, environmental and social and was developed to support their new vision and mission, encapsulated in a simple message: sport, technology and nature in powerful harmony.
The strategy was developed using the ISO20121 framework to enable the organisation to achieve certification as an initial goal of the strategy implementation. Issues and aspects were developed engaging the key members of the core World Sailing Team and working on prioritisation of actions across the Federation’s areas of work. This led to the identification of risks and opportunities, and eight objectives to drive the strategy forward.
The approach is now being embedded across their Special Events, SailGP being the first special event to sign up and implement the Special Event Sustainability Charter.
