World Sailing Sustainability Strategy
We delivered the International Federation, World Sailing, Sustainability Strategy. This was launched at their Sustainability Forum at the 2016 Annual Conference in Barcelona, Spain by World Sailing CEO Andy Hunt. The sustainability strategy defined World Sailing's approach across three pillars of sustainability - economic, environmental and social and was developed to support their new vision and mission, encapsulated in a simple message: sport, technology and nature in powerful harmony.
The strategy was developed using the ISO20121 framework to enable the organisation to achieve certification as an initial goal of the strategy implementation. Issues and aspects were developed engaging the key members of the core World Sailing Team and working on prioritisation of actions across the Federation’s areas of work. This led to the identification of risks and opportunities, and eight objectives to drive the strategy forward.
The approach is now being embedded across their Special Events, SailGP being the first special event to sign up and implement the Special Event Sustainability Charter.
London 2017 Environmental Assessment for the IAAF and Para-World Athletics
In 2017 we carried out the environmental impact study of the IAAF and Para World Athletics London 2017. The assessment covered both the London 2017 World Para Athletics and IAAF World Championships and reviewed the impacts of these events against the industry best practice framework: ISO 20121 Event Sustainability Management System and UK’s ‘Event Impacts’ framework.
Since 2010, Earth to Ocean has developed a database of sport and sustainability initiatives and we use this in our benchmarking of sustainability best practice.
As a result of the recommendations, Earth to Ocean have recently supported the IAAF in the development of a comprehensive sustainability strategy.
King's College London: Environmental Management System ISO14001
In 2016 we started to work with King’s College London to develop their Environmental Management System to publicly demonstrate their commitment and achievements in sustainability. Having achieved formal certification to ISO14001:2015 for the Strand campus in 2017, we rolled out the EMS to all five campuses and sports grounds. Working closely with the sustainability team, we developed systems and processes that worked and added value for KCL, encouraging the existing sustainability ethos amongst staff and student sustainability champions. The aim was always to develop an EMS that could be managed by the KCL sustainability team and other staff; this included mentoring staff and more formal training sessions, and practical support with audits and compliance reviews. In KCL’s own words The EMS is at the heart of embedding sustainability at King's College London, and takes a holistic view of the environmental impacts and risks arising from our activities. It is a structured management tool that enables us to systematically identify, evaluate, manage and improve environmental performance and practices. This brings many benefits across the organisation, including improving efficiency of our operations thereby reducing costs, demonstrating legal compliance, and boosting our reputation.
Ongoing support includes mentoring, either in person or remote, new staff as they join the team to maintain and continually improve the EMS at KCL.
“Thanks again for your excellent teaching of ISO14001 EMS”
Dr. Nicola Hogan, Sustainability Manager (Operations), King’s College London
Fairford Medical - Quality Management System ISO9001
Fairford Medical, who supply provide mobile and modular MRI and CT medical diagnostic imaging equipment, approached us following a referral through the BSI ACP programme, to help them develop a Quality Management System to ISO9001:2015.
It was quickly established they wanted to use the QMS to develop robust management processes as well as achieving certification to enable access to the NHS Supply Chain.
Working with all staff across sales, operations, design and admin, we helped to prioritise key processes and develop processes that met the needs of all staff and the developing business. Key suppliers and sub-contractors were brought into the development process, as, in common with many other companies, the supply chain is an essential part of a successful business. Support included one to one mentoring of staff, supply chain audits, identifying improvement objectives and support during external audits.
“We got our ISO 9001 certification! We are all super pleased. Thank you so much!”
Lisa Taylor, Digital Communications Manager, Fairford Medical Limited
Golf Foundation Tournament certification and 2014 Ryder Cup 2014 Sustainability programme
Working with the Golf Foundation we managed the Ryder Cup Sustainabilty programme and the European Tour's Green Drive. We initiated the development of the ISEAL standard for the international golf organisation, The Golf Foundation’s sustainability standard for events. We then supported the Golf Foundation and European Tour through their first verification audit in 2017 and 2018.
Links to the event verification reports can be found on the Golf Foundation website.
Sustainability strategy and implementation at Land Rover BAR
We developed the ISO20121 management system for the sports team Land Rover BAR and were the first sports team to achieve the certification, setting up the monitoring and reporting framework and sustainable procurement system; publishing their annual sustainability (GRI) reports; and developing the team carbon footprint, resulting in carbon neutrality for their development team, the BAR Academy. We deployed the management system at each of the events attended and worked with the event organisers to improve their own sustainability. We also developed the sustainability team charter which all teams competing in the 36th America’s Cup signed up to.
Our sustainability programme was award winning, achieving Beyond Sport's, Sport for Environment Award, the British Marine's Environment Award and Boat International Seafarer's award. In addition, in 2017, Susie Tomson was awarded Business Green's Sustainability Leader of the Year for driving the programme.
Aquila Nuclear Engineering: Quality Management System ISO9001
Quality at Aquila truly incorporates their company values of Excellence, Creativity, Wisdom and Trust, as this was embedded into all management processes when we first started to plan and develop the company’s QMS in 2010. Aquila designs bespoke equipment for their Tier 1 clients to safely manage active nuclear fuel and waste, preventing harm to staff, clients and the environment. In this highly regulated industry, quality and meeting customer expectations is crucial, and Aquila’s experienced group of nuclear engineers work hand in hand with the younger engineers coming into the industry to develop innovative solutions.
We have a shared ethos of pragmatic and effective solutions as shown by our ongoing business relationship over 10 years; we have continued to work with Aquila to develop their QMS and to integrate 14001 and 45001 through internal audits, providing support during external audits and more recently as their interim QHSE Manager.
Hatch modular housing - BOPAS and ISO9001 certification
Breaking new ground in the modular housing sector, this client has a vision to tackle the affordable housing shortage by creating a standardised, precision modular product in a localised factory setting, which will then create jobs for the communities for which it is building houses, generating income, and skills opportunities and sustainability for the Local Authorities and Housing Associations. Building modular homes in a factory setting provides better working conditions for staff, reduces construction waste, reduces construction traffic and reduces overall CO2 emissions.
We worked with Hatch to develop their QMS to meet the requirements of 9001 and BOPAS (Build Offsite Property Assurance Scheme) and more importantly to ensure the management system reflected the company vision and culture from the start, so that this will be embedded as they develop the business.
Quality and environmental management for marine and manufacturing industries
We work with our clients to understand their individual needs and provide the support they require. Typically, this begins with compliance with a Standard, however with our fundamental belief that management systems should work for the business, we use the framework to continually improve business performance. We do this with face to face meeting as well as virtual meetings, which saves time, carbon emissions and cost. Remote support enables us to provide a cost-effective service for clients whatever their location:
Delta Meco Crewing Services, based in Spain whose services include cadet training, including monitoring of their well-being and progress ashore and at sea.
GTT training based in UK and France providing simulator training for LNG cargo operations
Powerplate based in UK and USA providing ISO13485 support for their whole-body vibration technology
During the pandemic lockdown, this ability to work remotely has been invaluable to continue to support clients during external audits and ongoing management system support.
Manufacturing clients include sheet metal fabrication, and a precision engineering company specialising in all aspects of castings, CNC machining, CNC Tool Making, assembly and associated processes.
Supply chain audits have included sub-contractor factory visits, and compliance audits of waste contractors, to assess risks and to provide assurance of compliance to environmental and social requirements.
