Sustainable Event Management
We established the British Americas Cup team, TEAMORIGIN's environmental programme, Race for Change (www.teamorigin.com). Whilst sailing and the environment may seem a good fit in terms of impact, there is plenty of room for improvement and working with partners and suppliers we were able to reach a wider audience than just the team itself. We are fully trained in delivering BS8901 Sport event management and have previously advised and implemented measures at the 2006 Volvo ISAF Youth Worlds in Weymouth and developed the Royal Yachting Association's Major Events sustainability policy.
Environmental Awareness and Training
As Environmental and Planning Advisors to the national governing body of recreational boating, the Royal Yachting Association, from 2003-2010, we developed and managed The Green Blue, the Royal Yachting Association and British Marine Federation's Environmental Awareness programme (www.thegreenblue.org.uk). Five years on, the Green Blue is widely considered to be the leading environmental awareness programme amongst UK, and international sporting governing bodies.
We have also developed and delivered bespoke environmental training for a range of businesses, port and harbour
authorities and public sector organisations.
BS 8901
We developed the Sustainability Management System for Grapefruit Graphics sports branding company to support their journey to a more sustainable future. Their principles were based on the WWF One Planet Principles and they are fully engaging staff and suppliers in the continual development of the system. See Grapefruit Graphics website.
Research and Analysis
We devised and put together the UK Atlas of Recreational Boating, a GIS based tool of recreational cruising routes, sailing and racing areas which is extensively used by, among others, the offshore renewable energy industry. This project depended on a fully consultative process to gather expert input to develop the routes and areas before mapping them. See www.rya.org.uk/infoadvice/planningenvironment/Pages/boatingatlas.aspx
We have conducted extensive research into coastal access for recreational boating around the English and Welsh coasts, specifically looking for trends in loss of access points to redevelopment and coastal defences.
We produced a socio-economic assessment of coral bleaching analysing the impact of the 1997-8 coral bleaching on tourism and fisheries in the Indian Ocean and utilising economic valuation tools to achieve this as part of the CORDIO programme. See www.cordioea.org
Coastal and Marine Planning
We conducted the Strategic Environmental Assessments for recreational boating in SEA areas 6 and 8 with respect to renewable energy developments for the DTi. We have conducted research into the impediments to implementing successful integrated coastal zone management around the world and have utilised this in practical experience in coastal management in the UK. We have advised local harbour authorities as to the environmental implications of their operations. We have published a Planning and Environmental Handbook for coastal clubs and recreational facilities.
Marine Protected Areas
We co-ordinated recreational boating input into the decision making process for Marine Conservation Zones and other MPA initiatives in UK. We set up a volunteer-led data collection approach for recreational boating for Finding Sanctuary in South West England.
We have practical management experience working for the Bonaire National Marine Park – overseeing the park management, mooring system, research and volunteer programmes. See www.bmp.org
In Australia, we helped establish the representative area programme of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. See www.gbrmpa.gov.au/corp_site/management/representative_areas_program
Stakeholder Engagement
We have co-ordinated sector-wide responses to Government consultations on Water Framework Directive and offshore renewable energy developments.
We have delivered initial stakeholder workshops in order to develop the Chichester Harbour AONB Management Plan
